Several friends have asked recently about where to eat out in KC--who serves healthy food? Organic? Most of us love a meal out yet want to continue to feed ourselves healthfully...or at least want our tummies to enjoy our choice.
The truth is, you can find something healthy to eat (nearly) anywhere you go!
Make it a point to find what restaurants and foods work for you. I try to stick to dishes that are simple (fewer ingredients) and are as close to “whole” as possible, e.g. a piece of grilled chicken and a salad with vinegar and oil versus a more complex dish and salad with creamy dressing. I stay away from cream sauces and wheat…these typically offend my tummy.
Of course, many restaurants have nothing organic, and organic is always better if you can find it. We love Bluebird Bistro (1700 Summit, KCMO) for a night out, Jason’s Deli for a nice lunch (huge, organic salad bar with much more than salad). Ruby Tuesday also has an organic salad bar. A great resource for KC restaurants is www.vegkc.com – all restaurants listed have vegetarian dishes (but many also offer meat as well) and many are organic. Other favorites: Eden Alley (in Unity Temple on the plaza), Local Burger (in Lawrence), Bo Lings, Panera.
No matter where you go, if you don’t see something on the menu, ask them to make something for you. I’ve asked for grilled chicken breast or fish with a whole bunch of sautéed or steamed veggies instead of a potato. The chef is usually very accommodating and sends me a gorgeous plate of food.
Know what foods you like, what foods your body thrives on, and keep trying!
